Knitting a speaker grille
The sleeve is knitted in one piece on a flat-bed machine, from yarn spun out of recycled bottles. Here is how it holds its shape.
One piece, no seam
The sleeve is knitted as a tube on a flat-bed machine, so there is no seam to line up and nothing to fray.
Why knit, not woven
A knit stretches over the frame and pulls itself tight. A woven fabric needs glue to stay flat, and glue is what stops you replacing parts.
Each sleeve uses the yarn from about eleven plastic bottles.
